When it comes to stepping into our power, sometimes the most transformative thing we can do is embrace an alter ego—a version of ourselves that’s brimming with confidence and utterly fearless. In other words, it’s about learning how to be more confident by tapping into that inner archetype that’s already within you.
Think of it as channeling your own personal superhero. That alter ego is the part of you that isn’t bogged down by self-doubt or the fear of what others might think. Instead, it’s the part of you that knows exactly how to be more confident, fully alive in your potential.
Now, let me share a little story to make this personal: Many years ago I worked as a Dj-spanning 5 years. Music is a huge part of my world and heart. Compared to everything else I have experienced on my creative journey -Dj'ing made me the most nervous.
Nerves are beneficial- they energise you, yet I was always extremely nervous before each gig which occasionally diminished the enjoyment. Despite all the preparation possible, the stage fright was genuine.
However, here’s the trick I used: I’d step into my fearless DJ persona -my own alter ego. I’d literally think, “Lights, camera, action!” and embody that confident version of myself. It turned every gig from a nerve-wracking experience into a role I could slip into, making the whole thing not just manageable, but empowering and a success!
So how do you do it? Here are five strategic steps to help you channel that alter ego and discover how to be more confident:
1. Identify Your Archetype: Think of an alter ego that embodies all the traits you want—maybe it’s a fearless performer, a confident leader, or even a character from a film. This is the first step in learning how to be more confident.
2. Give Them a Backstory: Make this alter ego as real as you can. What’s their name? What’s their story? The more vivid they are in your mind, the easier it is to step into their shoes.
3. Practice Visualization: Spend a few minutes each day visualizing yourself as that alter ego. Picture how they stand, how they speak, and how they handle challenges. This is a core part of how to be more confident in any situation.
4. Use a Trigger/Anchoring Phrase: Come up with a short phrase that helps you switch into that alter ego on demand. Each time you say it, you’ll remind yourself of how to be more confident instantly.
5. Step Into the Role: Finally, when you’re facing a moment of doubt, consciously step into that role. Remind yourself that you already know how to be more confident—because you’re just letting that fearless part of you take the lead.
In the end, it’s all about realizing that this confident, powerful version of you is still you, just with a little extra flair and just like spinning tracks as a DJ, once you find that groove, you’ll know exactly how to be more confident whenever you need it.
Now, let’s get out there and rock that stage-whatever your stage may be!
